National Careers Week
BackLast week saw Sandwich Technology school celebrate National Careers week, all students took part in careers activities in tutor times, giving them an opportunity to learn about a variety of different careers, consider their futures and explore the different routes they could take to achieve their chosen career goals.
Sandwich Technology school places great importance on supporting and guiding all students in planning their educational and career pathways. “We want students to go as far as their talents will take them and to have a rewarding career.” Mrs Rooke, STS Careers Advisor. STS benefits from a full time careers advisor who implements a careers programme at STS that is designed to provide students with the education, information, advice and guidance they require in order to, understand the range of opportunities available to them in today’s economy, make accurate and timely decisions and acquire the skills and qualifications they need to succeed in the workplaces of the future.
STS are very fortunate to benefit from an extensive programme of outreach activities, designed by local universities to support students in broadening their horizons and raising their aspirations. Activities include visits to universities, careers fairs, the UCAS Higher Education Fair, summer schools, taster days, subject-related events, careers workshops, career-specific talks and special events as well as access to resources to use within lessons. Additionally they have strong links with local employers and parents who provide students with a wide variety of support including work placements, visits, talks, interview preparation, CV and personal statement assistance, careers fairs and work related learning events.
The week culminated with two university trips, one to Canterbury Christchurch University for Year 12 students and one to the University of Kent for some of our Year 8 students. Mrs Rooke was thrilled that the students enjoyed and gained so much from the day “It was great to see the students engaging so enthusiastically at the university, these trips enabled students to experience a snapshot of university life, attend a lecture, learn about the courses they offer and to realise that university is an option for all our students if it’s the pathway they wish to pursue.”
